The powerful art of Richmond Seju

Local Mission Partner Sunday is coming up on Jan. 18, 2015. Richmond Seju will be one of the featured artists present on Local Mission Partner Sunday. Since coming to Christ the King in 2012, Seju has become well known for his incredibly detailed and powerful drawings.

Currently, Seju is working on a series focused on powerful women. Some of the women is his drawings are based on well-known figures such as actress Lupita Nyongo (most recently made famous for her Oscar-winning performance in, 12 Years a Slave). Others are based Seju's close friends. The rest are expressions of the message he's trying to communicate through his art. His drawings convey a vibrant melding of both his experiences in the United States and growing up in Liberia, a country on the west coast of Africa.

Seju along with his family including mother and father, Joyce and George Seju (CtK members), uprooted to Minnesota from their home in Liberia in 2008. At the time, Liberia was being ravaged by civil war.

"I don't actually remember a lot about the war, but my parents used to tell me stories," Seju said in an April 2014 article of the Duluth News Tribune. "My mom would tell me how it wasn't safe and she used to move from place to place to keep us safe. You never knew when guys were going to come in and take your family."

Seju continued, "We used to live every day not knowing what was going to happen the next day, not knowing if we were going to have food to eat the next day."

Courage and strength (qualities demonstrated by Seju and his family as they left Liberia) shine through in his art, particularly in this most recent series. The women's faces show a striking level of resilience and confidence: facets that reflect the experience of overcoming of staggering obstacles.

We are excited for Seju to join us on Local Mission Partner Sunday. We hope you come, say hello, and see this incredible art for yourself.
