CtK member Tim Van Rooy works with a Habitat homeowner to cut drywall (2015)If you have never volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, you may wonder, “What’s it like to volunteer?” CtK member and active Habitat volunteer, Timothy Van Rooy, had this share about his first experience serving with the housing organization:
“My first Habitat experience was on a Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity trip to El Salvador with 28 other co-workers. Our build was to take place in a community called ‘Villa Esperanza’ or ‘Hope Village.’
“The first day we were joined by volunteers from the local Lutheran Church, Cristo Rey. I was incredibly humbled to have worked next to volunteers who were building 400 square foot brick homes for their neighbors, while they themselves were living in makeshift, dirt floor shacks that had no running water. It made me wonder if I could or would volunteer to build a home for my neighbor that was nicer than mine?
“On that same trip, I met Noami, a wheelchair-bound grandmother who was raising two grandchildren. Prior to her Habitat home, she and her grandchildren were renting a shack with rooms separated by cardboard. Through Habitat, she and her grandchildren now live in a safe, solid home with electricity and running water. Her home was a hand up, not a hand out. Noami and her family put in the sweat equity for their down payment, and make monthly mortgage payments toward their home, comparable to what she was paying in rent. Noami and her grandchildren are now flourishing in their new community. She has been voted president of the Villa Esperanza community association. Seeing how affordable housing can change the life of a family is why I build.
“Since then, I continue to volunteer on the local CtK builds and international Thrivent Builds trips. Carol and I are leading our next Thrivent Builds trip to Kauai, HI with a team made of friends, family, and members of CtK in November of this year.”
