By Pastor Peter Hanson
I am pleased to announced that as of Aug. 3, Ana Becerra will be joining the Christ the King ministry staff as the Cristo Rey Mission Developer.
Ana has been among the grassroots leaders of the Cristo Rey community since its earliest days. She has also been an active member and leader in the larger CtK congregation, serving on the Senior Pastor Call Committee in 2013 and on the Congregation Council as of 2016. This past February, she became the volunteer ministry leader for Cristo Rey, succeeding Pastor Jacqueline Belzer, who passed the baton in order to focus on Pueblo de Fe, the mission congregation she leads in West St. Paul. While serving in this volunteer capacity (and continuing to work her full-time job), Ana has also been actively discerning the future of Cristo Rey as well as her own sense of calling towards pastoral ministry with leaders from the Saint Paul Area Synod and leaders at CtK.
As we continue to bring Cristo Rey more fully under the umbrella of CtK’s ministry, Ana will be working three-quarters time, allowing for a much-enhanced level of leadership for Cristo Rey. The plan is that once Ana has established herself here at in this ministry, she will enter the ELCA’s Theological Education for Emerging Ministries (TEEM) program in 2017. As TEEM students are required to have an ongoing ministry and leadership presence while completing their studies, Christ the King/Cristo Rey will serve as her contextual learning site.
Ana’s new position is funded primarily by mission development grants from Saint Paul Area Synod and the ELCA’s Domestic Mission Unit. A three-year, $15,000 grant from the CtK Foundation (granted over the years 2014, 2015, and 2016) has also helped fund Cristo Rey’s ministry, including a portion of the new Mission Developer position.
It is our hope that CtK will continue to work with synod and ELCA leaders as they accompany Ana in her growth as a leader and in the development of the Cristo Rey mission.
Please join me in welcoming Ana to the Christ the King/Cristo Rey staff!
