The winter blood drive is just around the corner. (Friday, Jan. 20 to be exact.) While blood can make many of us squeamish, the benefits of donating blood shouldn’t. Here are five of the many reasons to finally overcome that fear of needles:
1. The need is always there.Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.
2. The need is big...
Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells, 7,000 units of platelets, and 10,000 units of plasma are needed every day in the U.S. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.
3. ...especially for Type O.
The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O.
4. Your donation helps people with cancer.
More than 1.68 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2016. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
5. Free snacks!
No blood donation could be complete without cookies.
So whether you’re donating to save a victim of a car accident, a cancer patient, or you’re just coming for the free cookies, be sure to mark your calendars for the Red Cross Blood Drive on Jan. 20, 2017 from 1:00-6:00 p.m. here at CtK.
