Sing Gloria! Highlights from the 2014 Christmas Concert

Christ the King celebrated its annual Christmas Concert on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2:00 p.m. This year's concert entitled, Sing Gloria!, included some classic carols like Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Silent Night as well as some unfamiliar (but equally enjoyable) pieces like Hope Is Born Again, Christmas in Heaven, and Sweet Little Jesus Boy. It was a terrific evening full of terrific music! Read More

With Advent joy and exuberance

Throughout Advent, our family sings the chorus to O Come, O Come, Emmanuel—first in English and then in French—as we light the candles on our Advent wreath. As we do, we can’t help but think of our friend Sophie Badji whenever we sing the French chorus. Actually we don’t think of Sophie so much as the three-year-old version of Sophie that still exists in our memories. That was nearly ten years ago now, when our family worshipped regularly with the Badji family in the living room of their home outside of Dakar, Senegal. Read More

Woven Together in Love: It’s Amazing!

Now our eyes are set on Mary and Joseph as they travel to Bethlehem and as we prepare to light the candles of joy and love the next two Sundays. It is the perfect theme as our Sunday school children lead us in worship with their pageant, “Woven Together in Love: It’s Amazing.” Come, hear the Christmas story and witness the gift of our children leading worship. Prepare ye the way of the Lord!

This week, our Advent texts turn to that unusual and memorable character of John the Baptist. Many of us who have grown up in the church have a certain image of this man—a massive beard, a camel skin tunic, eating locusts and wild honey—as well as his prophetic words, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” Some, like me, have his catch phrase indelibly set to music in our minds, with tunes both from Handel’s Messiah and Stephen Schwartz’ Godspell. The tradition of la presentación

The Christ the King community was grateful to welcome twin babies, Favio and Zoe Tufino. Zaira Peña, an active member in Cristo Rey, presented her babies during the 10:15 a.m. service this past Sunday. This blessing, modelled after the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, occurs 40 days after the birth of a child and is common among Hispanic and Latino families. Read More

Putting our stories to music

On Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, we welcomed gifted singer-songwriter Ken Medema to Christ the King. Medema led music in morning worship services and performed an afternoon concert on behalf of youth embarking on the ASP trip to Tennessee next summer. It was an event of laughter and joy, of truth and hope. It was an event not easily forgotten... Read More

Our thankful hopes

Earlier this week, at our monthly staff worship service, we participated in an exercise gleaned from the website Interactive Alternative Worship. First we considered, as many of will do this week, what each of us were currently thankful for. Then, after hearing one of the Bible readings for Thanksgiving Day, we were asked to think of ourselves not only as people of gratitude, but also as people of hope. Specifically, we were invited to wonder about what we hope to be thankful for a year from now. Read More
